Shumak’s springs has been known to locals at all times. Many Tibetan and ancient Mongolian inscriptions evidence it. They are said about healing properties of the springs and methods of taking water acoording Tibetan and ancient Mongolian lama’s medicine.
Modern researches have proved unique nature of springs and their originality. Hydrocarbonate and sulfate-hydrocarbonate, magnesion-calcic siliceous and radon waters are discovered there. There are about one hundred springs!
The main spring of Shumak’s springs is radon spring locating in loghouse. Hunters, cattle-breeder and tourist generations have been leaving many gifts there after healing.

1st day:
Going from Irkutsk to beginning of the route in Nilova Pustyn (Hermitage) village. The road goes along picturesque Tunkinskaya valley locating between Hamar-Daban range and Tunkinskie Golcy (Rocks) range. Visiting Buryat dacan temple. Lunch. Start of the travel. Today travel is short, for acclimatization. Duration is about 2-3 hours, distance is about 5-8 km, climbing is 980-1100 m. Night in tents.
2d day:
Climbing to timberline. Two small lakes are on the way. Going along deep Eheger river valley. Panorama at Tunkinskaya valley and Hamar-Daban range are opened from it. Camping at timberline. Distance – 15-18 km, climbing – 1100-1900 m. Night in tents.
3d day: Most important and heavy day. Overcoming Shumakskyi pass. It is highest pass in East Sayan (2760 m). Beautiful views at Tunkinskye rocks, circuses, mountain lakes are opened during rising. Coming down by lakes from the pass to beatiful waterfall (30 m). Camping lower the waterfall. (distance – 20-25km, climbing – 1900m-2760m-1800m).
4th day: Arriving to our goal – magic valley of Shumak’s springs. Good, short path along beautiful Shumak river. Going along wooden foot-bridge over Pravyi Shumak. It is confluent of Shumak river. Arriving to Shumak’s springs. Camping. Night in tents or house. (distance – 10-15km, descending – 1800m-1550m).
5th day:
Day of relaxation!
Meeting with springs, tasting different kinds of mineral waters. Walking, taking radon baths and just a rest.
6th day:
Day of relaxation. Radial walk to the rocks or Obzornyi peak. Walking to the holy place “Stolby” is recommended for people dreaming about happy family and healthy babies. And walking to Obzornyi peak is for romantic and mountain landscapes lovers.
7 - 9th day:
Coming back along the route to auto. (Distance 65km, climbing 1550m-2760m-980m). Coming back to Irkutsk.

Recommended outfit:
Packback of 60-90 litre with belt, COMFORTABLE tourist’s boots!!!, light footwear (sandal), cotton and thin woollen socks, sport cotton overcoat, warm sweater or fliss jersey, wind-cheater, raincoat!, tricot, shorts, sun glasses and sunblock, head-dress, repellent, first-aid outfit, personal hygienic goods, mug, soup-plate, spoone, knife.
Draw attention to comfort and quality of footwear. You should to tread out it if footwear is new.
It can be snowing in August and June at rock part of the route.
Participants carry some foods and group’s outfit.
This active tour is for normal health people
For experienced group foot part of the route can be increased by going to Arshan resort (+ 2 days). In this case route will be ring. That is return from Shumak is on another way.
Cost 2009:
Group of 8-13 persons: 16700 rub
Group of 5-7 persons: 20900 rub
Group of 2-3 - 4 persons: 30600 rub
Included: meeting, transfer Irkutsk-Nilova Hermitage-Irkutsk, accomodation, three meals a day, tourist’s outfit, excursions, guide, accidents insurance.
Not included: insurance against tick-borne encephalitis.
